Heil BM-17 Double Sided Headset

The BM-17 headset has been redesigned to offer greater comfort and versatility for portable radio operators. Lightweight and now finished in black with Heil Ham Radio branding, the updated design features a swivel-mounted boom microphone that can be positioned on either the left or right side to suit operator preference.

The BM-17 is available in both single-ear and dual-ear configurations, as well as with a choice of microphone elements to match different radio systems. Users can select either the BM-17 Dynamic microphone element or the BM-17 iC electret element.

Equipped with highly sensitive speakers, the headset delivers clear audio while requiring minimal AF drive from the transceiver. The speakers provide a frequency response of 200 Hz to 5 kHz with low distortion, and the acoustic foam ear cushions can be easily replaced when needed.

The BM-17 Dynamic version incorporates the BM-D dynamic microphone element, specifically engineered for communications applications. This 500-ohm element is compatible with most amateur radio transceivers that use low-impedance microphone inputs, typically ranging from 150 ohms to 4 kOhms. Radios requiring higher input impedance (10 kOhms to 30 kOhms) will need an Heil XT-1 impedance matching transformer. The dynamic element offers a frequency response of 120 Hz to 10 kHz.

For selected Icom transceivers with low-gain audio circuits, the BM-17 iC model uses a dedicated electret microphone element. This version requires a compatible adapter cable (sold separately) and operates with a frequency response of 35 Hz to 12 kHz. The element features fixed -3 dB points at 100 Hz and 12 kHz, a sensitivity rating of -57 dB at 600 ohms referenced to 1 kHz, and requires a +5 VDC bias supply. Users should consult their Icom radio manual for information on enabling microphone bias power.

The headset microphone terminates in a red 3.5 mm (1/8") mono plug, while the headphone connection uses a black 3.5 mm (1/8") stereo plug. A 1/4" adapter is included for additional compatibility. Heil AD-1 series adapters provide a simple interface to a wide range of transceivers, incorporating connections for both the headset microphone and an optional Heil foot switch or hand switch for push-to-talk operation.
