The Funcube dongle gets its name from a collaboration initially between AMAST-UK and the Radio Communication Foundation, both not-for-profit organisations. First developed in 2010, the dongles are the ground receiver for the Funcube satellite project. The brand has developed two dongle models, the Pro and the Base versions.

The primary motivation behind the Funcube project was to develop educational outreach. Their Base model is targeted at learners in the classroom to encourage science and technology via practical space experiments. The Pro model is different, having no inbuilt frequency limitation or range. It is compatible with many radio reception programs. The user can upgrade the firmware on both models.
